. hurricane sandy bearing down on the east the coast in what some are predicting as the perfect storm. maria is in the fox extreme weather center. >> tracking sandy which is still a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 725 miles per hour. one of -- 75 miles per hour. tropical storm force winds that extend outwards up to 520 miles. hurricane force winds extend out from the center over 100 miles. the storm system from one end to the other is more than a thousand miles and seeing the heavy rain falling across eastern portions of north carolina. the track is also some what unusual. it is forecast to go parallel to the coast and eventually take a sharp turn towards the left eventually making landfall across southern parts of the state of new jersey as we head into monday evening but because sandy is to large we will be feeling impacts from it well ahead of it making landfall. basically as we head into sunday we will start to see the rain increasing across portions of the northeast and then get a lot worse, judge jeanine, as we head into monday with the rein picking up wind gusts easil

and if you have an initial estimate about how much might be dispersed out of those sandy relatedopr stuff. >> public assistance, we have not done any of the permanent work. almost everything is still emergency work. that number will be based upon the the mission assignments and stuff. i will have public affairs is that back. for individual assistance, the total number of registrations in new jersey, new york, connecticut was 122,000 and total disbursed was 107 million dollars so far. >> could you address how the gas sorted is being helped -- shorter's is being held. our generators being offered? what else is being done for people who need gas for the generators? of work beinglot done in the utility's and the industry to get pipeline terminals back up and getting the receiving. that has already been occurring. the other part of the retail side and distribution of gas. we're working very closely with governor christie's team. sometimes getting additional trucks second off load fuel -- that can off load fuel. all of these options are under way and being worked with the states. correct

la cruz. we're keeping a close eye on hurricane sandy. it's making its presence felt along the eastern seaboard and has a long way to go before it's gone. the center of the storm is expected to be near the mid-atlantic coast monday night. major flooding and power outages are expected to impact millions of residents on the east coast. airlines already have canceled thousands of flights with more expected. let's go ahead and bring in our meteorologist bill karins with the latest on the track of the storm. what's it looking like? >> the storm is still on track for destiny along the jersey shore but spreading all the way from central new england all the way down through the carolinas and everyone within that range needs to expect power outages to be widespread. now, you can notice the radar rain loss will be an issue especially in the delmarva area and delaware and maryland. winds are howling up to 20 to 30 miles per hour and only gets worse during the day. once it hits 40 or 50 miles per hour is when we'll start to see power outages become more widespread. winds are still pretty s

gas shortage crippling new jersey and new york after hurricane sandy brought much of the northeast to a standstill. state troopers and local police have deploy to the remaining gas stations in the new york city metro area and still have gas and power, those few that do, as agonizingly long lines have frayed the nerves and are now adding to the problems that are gripping residents who are now entering their fourth night without power or heat. most gas stations in the region remain closed. those that are open are facing very angry customers that are forced to wait hours to have a chance to fill up their cars. the temperatures in the northeast are dropping. mass transit in both states is barely running and driving around on already congested city is becoming downright perilous. we are hearing reports of violence with one queens man, reportedly pulling a gun on another motorist at a gas station. here in new york city, local news stations are reporting that residents are digging through dumpsters for food. where is president obama? after his photohelpop with chris christie, he boards fa

the latest on the path of hurricane sandy. maria molena has an update on the powerful storms path and where it is heading. and it is it and so it is a large storm. and it is in the northeast and for today we are feeling the impact of the tropical storm impact in portions of the carolina coastline and south carolina and southeastern portions of the state of virginia and gusts up to 50 miles per hour possible and a lot of heavye storm will contino move northward and the rain will increase anywhere from 25 to 50 miles per hour and beach erosion will be a big concern along with coastal flood the combination of the on shore flow pushing water inland and heavy rain from the storm system. by monday, that is when sandy is forecast to make landfall it could be a category 1 hurricane. and regardless of that, we'll feel the impact as far as rain and coastal flood very strong winds. on the back end of the system, cold air will meet up with the moist and you are we'll see wet snow in western parts of virginia and southwestern parts of the state of pennsylvania, locally up to two feet or more o

still watching sandy here, and it's continuing to cruise off here towards the north. much of the caribbean, you did get impacted on your thursday, now going through friday. conditions are improving, still some showers across portions of haiti, but for the most part the storm is rushing off there towards the north. now the east coast of the united states, you're going to be on tap for some heavy rainfall. already you're seeing some very rough surf along the east coast of florida, even off there towards the carolinas. tropical storm watches and warnings are actually being posted here, but where the main threat's going to be is going into the early part of next week. take a look at this. as the storm continues to pull off here towards the north, it's going to be making a sharp turn towards the northwest, and that's where it's going to be impacting, around washington, d.c., even off towards new york city, you could even be seeing hurricane-strength winds. flooding from the heavy rainfall of the storm system but not just the exact track. this is a very wide wind field, so you're going
